News Item A-1: “Boeing 737 MAX’s Entry into China Corresponds with USA President Trump’s Visit” by Aaron Karp, (ATW) Plus, November 6, 2017.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 entered the Chinese market days ahead of USA President Donald Trump’s November 8 to 10 visit to China, during which Boeing commercial airplane sales were expected to a be a prime topic of discussion. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President & (CEO) Kevin McAllister, who recently was front and center at a White House signing ceremony to finalize an order for 39 Boeing wide body airplanes by Singapore Airlines (SIA) was among a group of (CEO)s accompanying President Trump to China.

News Item A-3: China Aviation Supplies Holding Company (CASC) (CSC) has signed orders and commitments covering 300 Boeing airplanes, valued at >$37 billion at list prices. The deal, which was signed in Beijing on November 9, coincided with USA President Donald Trump’s state visit to China. Chinese President Xi Jinping also attended the signing ceremony. Boeing (TBC) said the agreement included orders and commitments for 300 single- and twin-aisle airplanes, although (TBC) did not specify airplane types. According to some Chinese news reports, the 300 airplanes included 260 Boeing 737 family airplanes and a total of 40 airplanes from the 787 and 777 families.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) President & (CEO) Kevin McAllister described China as “a valued customer and a key partner.” >50% of all commercial jetliners operating in China are Boeing airplanes. “Boeing (TBC) and China have a strong history of working together based on great mutual respect, and these orders build on that foundation,” McAllister said. China has a component role on every Boeing commercial airplane model (the 737, 747, 767, 777 and the 787) and >9,000 Boeing airplanes fly worldwide with China-built parts and assemblies. “Boeing and China continue to work on mutually beneficial ways to grow and support the aviation market. These efforts include industrial cooperation, the development of technologies to reduce aviation’s environmental impact and enhance sustainability, and continued cooperation to support the safety, efficiency and capacity of China’s air transport system,” Boeing said.

News Item A-4: “China’s Boeing Deal More Spin Than News” by Dominic Gates, Seattle Times Aerospace Reporter.
The announcement (covered immediately above) of USA President Donald Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping in China of an order for 300 Boeing jets with a whopping list price of $37 billion is the usual “fake news” out of state visits to China. According to a person familiar with Boeing’s orders, who asked to not be identified because of the political sensitivities in the November 9th announcement: – “40 larger twin-aisle airplanes and 260 single-aisle airplanes” – are not newly ordered. As is typical with state visits of foreign leaders to China, these announcements of jet deals relate to jets that were either ordered long ago or are not yet firm orders. Boeing is soaring high above Airbus in sales this year, with net orders for 605 airplanes versus 288 aircraft for its European rival.

News Item A-5: Boeing (TBC) completed its acquisition of Virginia-based advanced aerospace platforms and autonomous systems manufacturer Aurora Flight Sciences on November 8. Boeing (TBC) intends to keep Aurora as an independent operating model under its Boeing Engineering, Test & Technology arm. As a subsidiary, the company will be renamed Aurora Flight Services, A Boeing Company. Boeing (TBC) plans to utilize Aurora to further development of autonomous systems technologies behind future robotic aircraft and aerospace vehicles. “Our [combined] teams will advance the development of autonomy for our commercial and military systems,” Boeing (CTO) & Senior VP Boeing Engineering, Test & Technology Greg Hyslop said when the acquisition of Aurora was announced in early October. “[With] Boeing (TBC), our technologies of long-endurance aircraft, robotic co-pilots, and autonomous electric (VTOL)s will be transitioned into world-class products for the global infrastructure,” Aurora Flight Services (CEO) and Founder John Langford said.

News Item A-6: The USA-based investment firm, 777 Partners, just announced it acquired the intellectual property of World Airways Inc (WLD). “(WLD) has a rich and storied history dating back to 1947. It was once the world’s largest independent charter airline, and served the USA military and other clients with great distinction for many years,” said Ed Wegel, Founding (CEO) of World Airways (WLD). (WLD) ceased operations in March 2014, almost 66 years after the day it began on March 29, 1948. The initially Atlanta-based carrier was unable to keep cash flowing to sustain service. 777 Partners will base a new World Airways (WLD) at Miami International Airport (MIA) with (MIA) and (LAX) as initial operating hubs. Likewise, negotiations are underway with Boeing (TBC) for 10 787 Dreamliners for World Airways (WLD) future operations throughout the USA and Latin America.

News Item A-7: Emirates Airline (EAD), the world’s largest international airline, announced a US$15.1 billion/AED 55.4 billion commitment for 40 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners. In the presence of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, (EAD) Chairman & President aswell as Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Ruler of Dubai signed the agreement with Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) President & (CEO) Kevin McAllister on November 12, the opening day of the 2017 Dubai Airshow. Sheikh Ahmed said: “Emirates’ orders today will be delivered from 2022, taking (EAD) well into the 2030s. Some of these will be replacements so that we maintain a young and efficient fleet, and others will power our future network growth. We see the 787 as a great complement to our 777 and A380 fleet, providing us with more flexibility to serve a range of destinations as we develop our global route network.” “It has always been Emirates (EAD)’s strategy to invest in the most advanced and efficient airplanes, and today’s orders reflect that. Today’s announcement also speaks to our confidence in the future of aviation in the (UAE) and the region.”

Mr McAllister said: “We are excited that Emirates has selected the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner to power its fleet expansion and future growth. This is an airplane that sets a new benchmark for operating economics in the commercial aviation industry when it enters service next year. Emirates’ endorsement of the 787 Dreamliner extends our long-standing partnership and will sustain many jobs in the USA.” The (EAD)’s agreement includes conversion rights to switch the airplanes to 787-9s, offering the airline additional flexibility for its future fleet and global network. (EAD)’s 787 Dreamliners will be delivered in a mix of 2 and 3-cabin class configurations, potentially seating between 240 and 330 passengers. These airplanes will be delivered in phases from 2022 onwards.

Emirates is a powerful source for American aerospace manufacturing jobs. Applying the USA Department of Commerce jobs multiplier (every US$1 billion in US aerospace exports supports 5,200 American jobs), this new order will create and support >78,000 additional jobs in USA aerospace manufacturing (not only with Boeing (TBC), but also with the thousands of other suppliers in the value chain across the USA, many of which are medium and small-sized businesses. This order comes on top of Emirates (EAD)’s historic purchase of 150 Boeing 777X airplanes equipped with (GE9X) engines at the 2013 Dubai Air Show, to be delivered from 2020 onwards. (EAD)’ partnership with Boeing spans decades. Emirates is by far the largest Boeing 777 operator on the planet with 165 777s in service today. With this announcement, Emirates will have committed to future delivery of 204 Boeing wide body airplanes.

News Item A-8: “Emirates’ 777X Fleet to Feature Dual (HGS) from Rockwell Collins” by China Aviation Daily, November 13, 2017.
Emirates (EAD) has opted to provide pilots (FC) with a technology that keeps eyes forward and focused on the outside world when flying their new Boeing 777X airplane fleet. Rockwell Collins’ Head-up Guidance System (HGS) has been selected by (EAD) for the 150 777X airplanes on order. The (HGS) displays will be installed for the pilot and co-pilot to provide training advantages for co-pilots and improve safety by requiring less time in head-down operations. “(HGS) has proven itself to be a tool that makes flying safer and more efficient,” said Claude Alber, VP & Managing Director, Europe, the Middle East & Africa for Rockwell Collins. “You add another level of safety by having 2 (HGS) displays on the flight deck, and it makes for a smoother transition for pilots (FC) moving from the right seat to the left seat.” The dual (HGS) for Emirates (EAD)’s 777X fleet will complement the numerous Rockwell Collins systems that will come standard on the 777X, including the 1st-ever touchscreen flight displays for commercial air transport airplanes. In addition, Rockwell Collins is providing the integrated surveillance system with MultiScan weather radar, select flight controls and the Avionics Gateway secure server router, and communication and navigation radios on the 777X.
